Proverbs 7 Devotional
The Slow Walk Toward Ruin
“Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths.”Proverbs 7:25 (BSB)
Proverbs 7 tells its warning as a story. From his window, the father watches a young man who lacks judgment wander near the adulteress's corner as daylight fades into night (7:7-9). He is not dragged there. He drifts. She meets him with flattery, with religious talk about offerings and vows, and with assurances that her husband is far away (7:14-20). He follows her on impulse, like an animal walking into a trap, not knowing it will cost him his life (7:22-23).
The story shows how temptation often works: a slow walk in the wrong direction long before a final choice. The father's answer is to keep wisdom so close that it is like a sister (7:4). Paul writes that every temptation is common to human beings, that God is faithful, and that he makes a way out so that his people can stand (1 Corinthians 10:13). Often that way out is simply a different street, taken early. The faithful God who sees the road ahead can turn your steps today.
To think about: Which small, familiar step tends to lead you toward temptation, and what different road could you take before you reach the corner?
