Numbers 29 Devotional

Humbled Before the Feast

“On the tenth day of this seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you must not do any work.”Numbers 29:7 (BSB)

The seventh month was crowded with holy days. It opened with a day for sounding trumpets (29:1). On the tenth day came a sacred assembly when the people were to humble themselves and do no work, with a sin offering alongside the offering of atonement (29:7, 11). Five days later a seven-day feast began, with thirteen bulls on its first day, then twelve, then eleven, down to seven on the seventh, followed by a solemn assembly on the eighth day (29:12-13, 32, 35-36).

The order matters. The month moves from humbling to feasting, from atonement to abundance. Leviticus adds that this feast was a week of rejoicing in God's presence (Leviticus 23:40). Their joy did not have to be manufactured. It came after sin had been dealt with, and it was marked by generous offerings day after day. When you come to God honestly about your sin, you are not walking toward a smaller life. You are walking toward a feast.

To think about: What sin do you need to bring honestly to God, trusting that what lies beyond it is joy?

About Numbers 29: Offerings for the Fall Feasts

The Lord specifies the offerings for the seventh month's Feast of Trumpets and Day of Atonement, when the people humble themselves. For the Feast of Booths, a decreasing number of bulls is offered each day, seventy in all, followed by a solemn assembly on the eighth day.
