Nehemiah 5: Nehemiah Defends the Poor
Poor Jews cry out because famine, debt, and taxes have forced them to mortgage their land and sell their children into slavery. Nehemiah rebukes the nobles for charging interest, and they swear to return what they took. As governor he refuses his food allowance out of reverence for God and asks God to remember him.
