Lamentations 5 Devotional

Praying From the Ruins

“You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation.”Lamentations 5:19 (BSB)

Lamentations closes with a prayer from the whole community. They ask the LORD to remember what has happened and to look at their shame (5:1). Strangers hold their land, and they must pay for water (5:2-4). Joy has left their hearts, and their dancing has given way to grief (5:15). They confess that they have sinned (5:16), and they grieve over Mount Zion, now empty except for foxes (5:18).

At the center stands one unshakable line: the LORD still rules, and his throne outlasts every generation (5:19). Everything else has fallen, but he has not. So they ask him to restore them to himself so that they can return (5:21). Even their turning back must begin with him. The book ends, not with an answer, but with the fear that he may still be angry (5:22). Scripture lets that silence stand. Faith does not always end its prayers with resolution. Sometimes it can only hold on to God's reign and keep asking. Even then, addressing the prayer to him is itself an act of trust.

To think about: What prayer are you still waiting to see answered, and how can you keep bringing it to the LORD who reigns?

About Lamentations 5: A Prayer for Restoration

The people ask the LORD to remember their disgrace as foreigners hold their land and their joy turns to mourning. They confess their sin, affirm that God reigns forever, and plead with Him to bring them back to Himself, ending with the fear that He may still be angry.
