Lamentations 4 Devotional

When Every Security Fails

“O Daughter of Zion, your punishment is complete; He will not prolong your exile. But He will punish your iniquity, O Daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins.”Lamentations 4:22 (BSB)

Lamentations 4 measures how far Zion has fallen. Gold has lost its shine, and the precious sons of the city are now treated like clay pots (4:1-2). Children plead for food and receive none (4:4). The cause is named plainly: the sins of the prophets and priests who shed righteous blood (4:13).

Every security the people trusted failed them. They kept watching for help from a nation that was powerless to rescue them (4:17). Even their king, the LORD's anointed, was captured (4:20). Then, at the very end, comes the first ray of light in the chapter: Zion's punishment has run its course, and her exile will not be prolonged (4:22). God's discipline has an end. Isaiah later goes further, telling Jerusalem that her hard service is over and her sin is forgiven (Isaiah 40:2). False hopes fail, but the LORD keeps his word, both when he judges and when he says it is enough. You can stop watching for rescue that will not come and look to him.

To think about: What have you been watching for rescue, the way Zion watched from her towers, instead of looking to the LORD?

About Lamentations 4: Zion’s Glory Turned to Ruin

The poet contrasts Zion’s former splendor with the misery of siege and famine, judging her punishment greater than Sodom’s. The disaster is traced to the sins of prophets and priests, the king is captured, and Edom is warned while Zion’s punishment is declared complete.
