Judges 6 Devotional

The God Who Bears Our Doubts

““Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.””Judges 6:16 (BSB)

Seven years of Midianite raids drive Israel into caves, and they cry out to the LORD (6:2, 6). God's first answer is a prophet, who reminds them that he brought them out of Egypt and that they had not listened (6:8-10). Grace does not skip the truth. Then the angel of the LORD finds Gideon threshing wheat in a winepress, hiding from the enemy, and greets him as a mighty warrior (6:11-12).

Gideon answers with honest questions. If the LORD is with them, why has all this happened (6:13)? God sends him and promises his presence (6:14-16). Even so, Gideon tears down his father's Baal altar by night because he is afraid (6:27), and he asks for the fleece to be wet and then dry, though God has already said what he will do (6:36-40). God answers each request. The psalmist says the LORD remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:14). Strength for what God calls you to comes from his promise to be with you, not from feeling ready.

To think about: What has God already promised you that you keep asking him to prove again?

About Judges 6: Gideon Called to Deliver Israel

Midian ravages Israel for seven years, and when the people plead for help God first sends a prophet to rebuke their disobedience. The LORD’s angel then calls the fearful Gideon to rescue Israel; Gideon destroys his father’s Baal altar, earns the name Jerubbaal, and receives two signs with a fleece.
