Job 26 Devotional
More Than We Can Hear
“He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing.”Job 26:7 (BSB)
After mocking Bildad's help (26:2-4), Job outdoes Bildad's praise of God. The realm of the dead lies open before God (26:6). He stretches the northern skies over empty space and suspends the earth with nothing beneath it (26:7). He binds up the waters in clouds that do not tear (26:8), marks out the horizon on the face of the waters (26:10), and by his power stirs up the sea and shatters Rahab (26:12).
Yet all this, Job says, is only the outer edge of what God does. We catch a faint sound of him; who could grasp his power at full strength (26:14)? Job is suffering and still arguing with God, yet he sees that the God he is arguing with is far greater than anything he can describe. Paul says that in Christ all things hold together (Colossians 1:17). The earth that hangs over nothing is held. If what we can see of God's power is only its outer edge, then our troubles are held by more than we can see.
To think about: What trouble in your life looks different when you remember it is held by a power far beyond what you can see?
