Job 25 Devotional

The Question Bildad Left Open

Bildad's last speech is six verses long. He begins with God's majesty: rule and awe are his, his armies cannot be counted, and his light rises on everyone (25:2-3). Then he asks a real question: how could any human being ever stand clean and in the right before such a God (25:4)? If even the moon and stars are not pure in God's sight, how much less a human being, whom Bildad compares to a maggot and a worm (25:5-6).

Job had asked the same question in chapter 9. It is the right question. But Bildad offers no answer to it. He only makes the distance between God and people feel greater. The three friends never speak again. Paul says that at the cross God proved himself righteous while also putting right with himself everyone who trusts in Jesus (Romans 3:26). The gap Bildad could only measure, God has crossed himself. Being right with God does not depend on becoming pure enough to stand there. It is given.

To think about: How does knowing that being right with God is a gift change the way you come to him today?

About Job 25: Bildad on Human Impurity

Bildad gives his brief final speech, praising God’s rule and His countless troops. He asks how any mortal can be right with God when even the moon and stars fall short of purity, and he compares human beings to maggots and worms.
