Jeremiah 32 Devotional

Hope Signed and Sealed

““Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too difficult for Me?”Jeremiah 32:27 (BSB)

Babylon's siege ramps are against Jerusalem's walls, and Jeremiah is confined in the courtyard of the guard (32:2). Then God tells him to buy a field. Jeremiah weighs out seventeen shekels of silver, signs the deed before witnesses, and has Baruch seal the copies in a clay jar to last a long time (32:9-14). The message is simple: fields and vineyards will be bought in this land again (32:15).

Afterward Jeremiah prays honestly. He confesses that nothing is too difficult for the God who made heaven and earth (32:17), yet he still points to the siege ramps and asks, in effect, why buy land now (32:24-25). God answers by turning Jeremiah's confession into a question: is anything too difficult for him (32:27)? He promises an everlasting covenant and says he will rejoice in doing his people good, with all his heart and soul (32:40-41). Paul says Abraham was fully convinced that God could do what he had promised (Romans 4:20-21). Faith can sign the deed even while the siege goes on.

To think about: What small, concrete step could you take today that shows you trust what God has promised, even while the siege goes on?

About Jeremiah 32: Jeremiah Buys a Field During the Siege

While Babylon besieges Jerusalem and Zedekiah holds him under guard, Jeremiah buys his cousin Hanamel's field at Anathoth and has Baruch store the deeds as a sign that land will be sold there again. Jeremiah prays, and God answers with judgment on the city and a lasting covenant of return.
