Jeremiah 19 Devotional
When the Clay Has Hardened
“and you are to proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will shatter this nation and this city, like one shatters a potter’s jar that can never again be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.”Jeremiah 19:11 (BSB)
Jeremiah 19 picks up the potter image and carries it one step further. Jeremiah takes a finished clay jar to the Valley of Ben-hinnom, with elders and priests watching (19:1-2). There he announces disaster on Jerusalem for worshiping other gods and burning their children as offerings to Baal, something utterly foreign to God's commands and to his heart (19:4-5). Then he smashes the jar, a sign that the city will be broken beyond repair (19:10-11).
In chapter 18 the clay was still soft on the wheel and could be reworked. Here the jar is fired and hard, and broken pottery cannot be put back together. The difference is not in the potter's skill but in how long the people refused to heed his words (19:15). God's patience is long and real, but it is not endless. Hebrews urges that today, while God's voice is heard, no one should harden their heart (Hebrews 3:15). If he is pressing something on you now, answer today, while the clay is still soft.
To think about: Is there a word from God you have been putting off, and what would it look like to respond to it today?
