James 1 Devotional

The Giver Who Never Changes

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.”James 1:17 (BSB)

James opens with something hard to hear. When trials come, he says, count them as joy, because the testing of faith produces endurance, and endurance makes a believer mature and complete (1:2-4). Then he draws a firm line about temptation. God tempts no one. Sin grows out of our own desires, and once it is full grown it ends in death (1:13-15).

Against that downward pull James sets the character of God. Every good gift comes down from above, from the Father of the lights in the sky, who never changes or shifts like a shadow (1:17). He gives wisdom freely to anyone who asks, without scolding them for asking (1:5). By his own choice he gave us new birth through his word (1:18). So the call to do what the word says, not merely hear it (1:22), is not a ladder up to God. The word is already planted in you as his gift (1:21), and obeying it is simply letting that gift take root instead of walking away and forgetting it.

To think about: What has God shown you in his word lately that you have heard but not yet acted on?

About James 1: Trials, Temptation, and Doers of the Word

James tells believers to count trials as joy because testing produces endurance, and to ask God for wisdom in faith. Temptation comes from one's own desire, not from God, who gives every good gift, so believers must be quick to listen and be doers of the word.
