Hebrews 13 Devotional
Steadied by a Changeless Christ
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”Hebrews 13:8 (BSB)
Hebrews ends with practical instructions: keep loving one another, welcome strangers, remember prisoners, honor marriage, and refuse to be ruled by the love of money (13:1-5). These are not a new burden added to the gospel. Each one leans on something God has done or promised. Contentment rests on God's promise that he will never abandon his people, which lets them face others without fear because the Lord is their help (13:5-6). Steadiness rests on the fact that Jesus Christ stays the same through every age (13:8).
Jesus suffered outside the gate, making his people holy by his own blood, so they go out to him, sharing his disgrace and looking for the city still to come (13:12-14). The letter closes with a prayer that the God of peace, who brought Jesus back from the dead, would equip them to do his will and work in them what pleases him (13:20-21). The God who asks for faithfulness is the God who supplies it. Whatever this week requires of you, he is at work in you to accomplish it.
To think about: Which of these instructions feels hardest for you right now, and which promise of God in this chapter speaks to it?
