Isaiah 55 Devotional

The Word Always Does Its Work

“so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.”Isaiah 55:11 (BSB)

Chapter 55 opens like a market where nothing has a price. The thirsty are called to drink, and those with no money are told to come and eat (55:1). God asks why people spend money and effort on what cannot satisfy, and he offers an everlasting covenant rooted in his faithful love to David (55:2-3). Jesus made the same kind of offer when he called the thirsty to come to him and drink (John 7:37).

The invitation is urgent. People are urged to seek the LORD while he is near, and even the wicked are told he will pardon freely if they return (55:6-7). His ways are as far above ours as the heavens are above the earth (55:8-9), and that includes the size of his mercy. Just as rain and snow water the earth and make it fruitful, his word never goes out without results (55:10-11). When God speaks pardon, it lands. You can come with empty hands and trust his word to accomplish its purpose in you.

To think about: Where have you been spending yourself on what does not satisfy, and what would it look like to come to God with empty hands?

About Isaiah 55: The Free Invitation to Grace

The LORD invites all who thirst to receive satisfying food and drink at no cost and promises an everlasting covenant grounded in His faithful love for David. He urges the wicked to turn back to Him, for He pardons freely and His word always achieves its purpose, and His people will go out in joy as the land is renewed.
