Isaiah 54 Devotional

Love Steadier Than Mountains

“Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”Isaiah 54:10 (BSB)

Zion is pictured as a childless woman, abandoned and ashamed, and God tells her to sing and enlarge her tent, because her children will spread in every direction (54:1-3). The shame of her past will be forgotten, because her Maker is her husband and the Holy One of Israel is her Redeemer (54:4-5).

God does not pretend the hard years did not happen. He admits that for a brief moment he left her and hid his face in anger. But the comparison is deliberately lopsided: a moment of anger set against everlasting kindness and great compassion (54:7-8). He ties his promise to the oath he swore after Noah's flood (54:9). Mountains may be moved and hills shaken, yet his loyal love will not leave her, and his covenant of peace will not be broken (54:10). Paul is convinced that nothing in all creation can separate believers from God's love in Christ (Romans 8:38-39). Whatever has shaken you, God's commitment to his people is more stable than the ground under your feet.

To think about: What feels shaken in your life right now, and how does God's unbreakable covenant love steady you?

About Isaiah 54: Barren Zion and the Covenant of Peace

The LORD tells childless Zion to sing and widen her tent, for her children will be many. Her Maker is her husband, His anger lasted only a moment, and like His oath after Noah's flood His peace covenant cannot fail; He promises a jeweled city, children taught by Him, and safety from every weapon.
