Isaiah 45 Devotional

An Open Call to the Earth

“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.”Isaiah 45:22 (BSB)

God speaks to Cyrus by name and calls him his anointed, promising to go before him and break open bronze gates (45:1-2). Twice he says this is happening even though Cyrus does not know him (45:4-5). God's purpose reaches beyond Cyrus: the whole world should know there is no God besides the LORD, who forms light and darkness (45:6-7). He is not threatened by the rulers of the earth. He uses them.

The chapter rebukes anyone who questions how God works, like clay arguing with the potter (45:9-11). But its center is an invitation. God, the only righteous Savior, calls the ends of the earth to turn to him and be saved (45:21-22). He swears that every knee will bow to him (45:23). Paul takes up those words and says every knee will bow at the name of Jesus and every tongue confess him as Lord (Philippians 2:10-11). He directs kings, and he also opens his arms to everyone. No one is too far away to turn toward him.

To think about: Who in your life seems far from God, and how could this chapter's invitation shape the way you pray for them?

About Isaiah 45: Cyrus Anointed and Salvation for All Nations

The LORD commissions the Persian king Cyrus, who does not know Him, to conquer nations and free Israel's exiles for His people's sake. He claims rule over light, darkness, prosperity and disaster, rebukes those who question their Maker, and invites the whole earth to turn to Him, swearing that all will bow.
