Hebrews 3 Devotional

Hearts Kept Soft Together

“But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”Hebrews 3:13 (BSB)

Hebrews 3 sets Jesus beside Moses. Moses served God's house faithfully as a servant; Jesus rules over it faithfully as the Son, just as a builder deserves more honor than the house he builds (3:3-6). Then the chapter turns to the generation Moses led out of Egypt. They saw God's works for forty years, yet they tested him, and their hearts kept wandering (3:9-10). They never entered his rest, and the reason given is simple: unbelief (3:19).

The warning is addressed to people who already belong to God's house (3:6, 12). Unbelief here is not a lack of information. It is a heart that abandons the living God, hardened little by little by the deceitfulness of sin (3:12-13). Part of God's answer is the church itself. Believers are to encourage one another every day, while it is still today (3:13). God often guards his people through each other. The voice calling you is the voice of the faithful Son, and you were never meant to listen for it alone.

To think about: Who could you encourage in faith today, and who do you need to let speak honestly into your own life?

About Hebrews 3: Jesus Greater Than Moses

Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, as a son over God's house is greater than a servant in it. Recalling Israel's rebellion in the wilderness, the author warns readers not to harden their hearts through unbelief but to encourage one another daily.
