Hebrews 2 Devotional

Made Like Us to Free Us

“Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.”Hebrews 2:18 (BSB)

Hebrews 2 opens with a warning. If the message given through angels carried real penalties, there is no escape for those who neglect a salvation this great (2:1-3). The danger named here is not dramatic rebellion but drift, the slow slide of people who stop paying attention. Neglect is enough.

But the salvation itself fills the rest of the chapter. The Son, far above the angels, was made lower than them for a little while so that by God's grace he might experience death on behalf of everyone (2:9). He shared our flesh and blood so that through his death he could break the devil's power and free people who had lived their whole lives as slaves to the fear of death (2:14-15). He calls them his brothers and is not ashamed of them (2:11). And because he himself suffered under temptation, he can come to the aid of those facing it (2:18). The cure for drifting is not anxious effort. It is looking again at Jesus, who came down to bring his people to glory (2:10).

To think about: Where have you been slowly drifting from Jesus, and what would it look like to give him your attention again today?

About Hebrews 2: Such a Great Salvation

Readers must not drift from the message of such a great salvation. Jesus became lower than the angels for a time so that he could suffer death for everyone, destroy the devil's power, and become a merciful high priest who helps those being tested.
