Genesis 26 Devotional

Room Made by God

“and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.””Genesis 26:24 (BSB)

Isaac's life echoes his father's, for better and worse. In a famine, the LORD tells him to stay in the land and repeats the promise he made to Abraham (26:2-5). Then, afraid for his life, Isaac tells the men of Gerar that Rebekah is his sister, the same lie Abraham told (26:7). God protects them anyway, and blesses Isaac's crops a hundredfold.

When the Philistines envy him and seize the wells his servants dig, Isaac does not fight. He moves on and digs again, until he finds a well no one disputes and names it Rehoboth, because the LORD has made room for them (26:22). That night God appears and tells him not to be afraid, because he is with him and will bless him for Abraham's sake (26:24). Even his enemies end up saying they can see the LORD is with him (26:28). When God has promised to make room for you, you do not have to fight for every inch.

To think about: Where are you fighting for ground that you could trust God to provide in his own way?
