Ezekiel 44 Devotional

When God Is the Inheritance

“In regard to their inheritance, I am their inheritance. You are to give them no possession in Israel, for I am their possession.”Ezekiel 44:28 (BSB)

The outer east gate is shut, and it must stay shut, because the LORD himself has entered through it (44:1-2). Then God sets out who may come near. Levites who wandered after idols will still serve, guarding the gates and slaughtering sacrifices for the people, but they will not approach him as priests (44:10-14). The sons of Zadok, who stayed faithful when Israel strayed, will stand before him and teach the people the difference between holy and common (44:15, 23).

Then comes a surprising line about the priests' share. They are to receive no property in Israel, because God himself is to be their share (44:28). Those who serve nearest to God are given him rather than fields. The psalmist says the same about his own life, calling the LORD his chosen share and rejoicing in what has been given him (Psalm 16:5-6). Whatever you lack or lose of this world's goods, God gives himself to his people, and no field or fortune is a richer possession.

To think about: What possession or security are you tempted to treat as your real inheritance, and what would it mean to count God himself as your portion?

About Ezekiel 44: The Shut Gate and the Faithful Priests

The LORD orders the outer east gate kept closed because He has entered by it, and He bars uncircumcised foreigners from His sanctuary. Levites who served idols lose priestly access, while Zadok’s faithful descendants serve near Him, teach the people, and have God Himself as their inheritance.
