Ezekiel 40 Devotional

A Future Drawn to Scale

““Son of man,” he said to me, “look with your eyes, hear with your ears, and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for that is why you have been brought here. Report to the house of Israel everything you see.””Ezekiel 40:4 (BSB)

Fourteen years after Jerusalem fell, Ezekiel is carried in visions of God to a very high mountain in the land of Israel (40:1-2). A man who looks like bronze meets him with a linen cord and a measuring rod, and tells him to look, listen, pay close attention, and report everything to Israel (40:3-4). Then the measuring begins. Wall, gates, chambers, porticos, and courts are measured one by one, each gate with the same care as the one before it (40:5-37). Even the tables for the offerings are counted (40:38-43).

For a people whose temple lay in ruins, this careful plan was itself a message. God had not lost track of his purposes. The vision does not ask the reader to master every measurement, but its precision makes a point of its own: what God intends for his people is not vague or improvised. Hebrews says Abraham was looking ahead to a city that God himself planned and built (Hebrews 11:10). What God has planned for you, he has planned with care.

To think about: Where do you need to trust that God's plans for you are careful and deliberate rather than vague or forgotten?

About Ezekiel 40: A Vision of the New Temple

Years into the exile, God carries Ezekiel in a vision to a lofty mountain in Israel, where a bronze-looking guide with measuring tools meets him. He tells Ezekiel to report all he sees to Israel, leads him through the gates and courts, names Zadok’s sons as the priests who may come near, and ends at the temple porch.
