2 Kings 19 Devotional
A Letter Spread Before God
“And now, O LORD our God, please save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.””2 Kings 19:19 (BSB)
Hezekiah takes Sennacherib's threatening letter up to the house of the LORD and spreads it out before him (19:14). Then he prays. He begins not with the danger but with God: enthroned between the cherubim, God alone over every kingdom, maker of heaven and earth (19:15). He admits that Assyria has destroyed nations whose gods were only wood and stone (19:17-18). Then he asks for rescue so that every kingdom will know the LORD alone is God (19:19).
The LORD answers through Isaiah. He has heard. Sennacherib's pride has been aimed at the Holy One of Israel, and he will return home without shooting an arrow into the city (19:20-33). The LORD will defend Jerusalem for his own sake and for David's (19:34). That night the angel of the LORD strikes the Assyrian camp (19:35). Peter urges believers to throw every anxiety onto God, because he cares for them (1 Peter 5:7). Whatever threatening words you have received, you can lay them open before him too.
To think about: What worry could you spread out before God today, beginning your prayer with who he is?
