1 Chronicles 3 Devotional
A Line That Survived Exile
“The descendants of Jeconiah the captive: Shealtiel his son,”1 Chronicles 3:17 (BSB)
Chapter 3 follows the house of David. It names his sons born in Hebron and in Jerusalem, then traces the kings in a straight line from Solomon to Josiah (3:10-14). There is no comment on which kings were faithful and which were not. The line simply runs on until it reaches Jeconiah, called the captive (3:17). The royal house has gone into exile.
And still the list does not stop. Jeconiah has sons, Pedaiah's son Zerubbabel follows, and then his children and grandchildren, generation after generation (3:17-24). The throne is empty, but the family is not lost. God had promised David that his son's throne would be established forever (17:11-14), and this chapter quietly shows him keeping David's line alive through captivity. Matthew lists the same names after the exile, Jeconiah, Shealtiel and Zerubbabel, on the way to Jesus (Matthew 1:12). When a promise of God seems buried under loss, this plain record is a reminder that he is still counting generations toward the King he promised.
To think about: Where does a promise of God seem buried under loss for you right now, and how does this chapter shape the way you wait?
