1 Chronicles 28 Devotional

Chosen and Not Forsaken

“David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do it. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will neither fail you nor forsake you before all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.”1 Chronicles 28:20 (BSB)

David gathers Israel's leaders and tells them the story of God's choosing. He had wanted to build a house for the ark, but God said no (28:2-3). Yet the LORD chose Judah, then David's father's household, then David himself, and now Solomon, to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD (28:4-5). Every step was God's decision. Even the plans for the temple, came from the LORD's hand on David (28:11-19).

David charges Solomon to serve God wholeheartedly, because the LORD searches every heart. Those who seek him will find him, and those who forsake him will be rejected (28:9). Then David gives the reason Solomon can begin. The LORD God will be with him and will not fail him or forsake him until all the work for his house is finished (28:20). Paul shares the same confidence, that God who began a good work will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6). He does not abandon what he has started in you.

To think about: What task God has given you feels too big right now, and how does his promise not to forsake you change how you approach it?
