Zechariah 6 Devotional
A Priest on the Throne
“Yes, He will build the temple of the LORD; He will be clothed in splendor and will sit on His throne and rule. And He will be a priest on His throne, and there will be peaceful counsel between the two.’”Zechariah 6:13 (BSB)
The night visions end where they began, with horses sent out by the LORD. Four chariots come out from between two bronze mountains, and the angel explains that they are the four spirits of heaven, going out from the Lord of all the earth to patrol it (6:1-7). Nothing in the world lies outside his reach.
Then Zechariah takes silver and gold from returned exiles, makes a crown, and sets it on the head of Joshua the high priest (6:9-11). The crowned priest is a sign of someone greater, a man named the Branch, who will build the LORD's temple, be clothed in majesty, and rule from his throne while serving as priest, with peace between the two roles (6:12-13). Hebrews says Jesus is that kind of high priest, now seated at the right hand of the throne in heaven (Hebrews 8:1). The King you answer to is also the priest who stands for you.
To think about: How does it change your prayers to know that the one who rules over you also serves as your priest?
