Zechariah 2 Devotional

A City Too Full for Walls

“For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.’””Zechariah 2:5 (BSB)

A young man sets out with a measuring line to mark off Jerusalem's width and length, and an angel is sent running with a message (2:1-4). The city God has in mind cannot be measured that way. It will spill past any walls because of all the people and animals in it, and the LORD himself will be a wall of fire around it and the glory inside it (2:4-5).

Exiles still living in Babylon are called to come home, and God says that anyone who harms his people is touching what is most precious to him (2:6-8). Then comes a promise reaching beyond Israel: many nations will join themselves to the LORD and become his people, and he will live among them (2:10-11). John says that in Jesus the Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1:14). The safety of God's people never rested on stone. It rests on his presence, which is wide enough to welcome people from every nation, including you.

To think about: What walls are you relying on for security, and what would it mean to trust God's presence as your protection instead?

About Zechariah 2: Jerusalem Without Walls

Zechariah sees a man setting out to measure Jerusalem and learns the city will be too crowded for walls, with the LORD Himself as its fiery protection. The exiles are called home from Babylon, many nations are promised a place among His people, and all humanity is told to be still before Him.
