Zechariah 14 Devotional

Holy Down to the Cooking Pots

“On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—the LORD alone, and His name alone.”Zechariah 14:9 (BSB)

Zechariah 14 is hard to picture, and it is wise not to claim more than it says. A day of the LORD comes when nations gather against Jerusalem, and the city is captured, its houses looted, its women assaulted, and half its people exiled (14:1-2). Then the LORD himself goes out to fight. His feet stand on the Mount of Olives, which splits in two (14:3-5). Living water flows out from Jerusalem in summer and winter, and the LORD becomes king over the whole earth, with no rival beside him (14:8-9).

Then, unexpectedly, survivors from the nations that attacked the city come year after year to worship the King at the Feast of Tabernacles (14:16). Even horse bells and cooking pots are marked as holy to the LORD (14:20-21). The line between sacred and ordinary disappears. At that same feast, Jesus invited anyone thirsty to come to him and drink (John 7:2, 7:37-38). Because the whole earth is his, your most ordinary tasks can be offered as worship to the King.

To think about: Which ordinary part of your day could you offer to God as worship, as if it were marked holy to him?

About Zechariah 14: The LORD Reigns Over the Whole Earth

On the day of the LORD, nations attack Jerusalem, but the LORD fights them, splitting the Mount of Olives in two where He stands. Living water flows from the city, the LORD reigns as the one King, survivors of the nations come yearly for the Feast of Tabernacles, and even common things become holy.
