- Zechariah 1: A Call to Return and the First Visions
Zechariah urges the returned exiles to come back to the LORD and not repeat their ancestors' stubbornness. In a night vision, riders report a quiet earth, and the LORD promises mercy for Jerusalem and a rebuilt temple. Four horns representing the powers that dispersed Judah are then thrown down by four craftsmen.
- Zechariah 2: Jerusalem Without Walls
Zechariah sees a man setting out to measure Jerusalem and learns the city will be too crowded for walls, with the LORD Himself as its fiery protection. The exiles are called home from Babylon, many nations are promised a place among His people, and all humanity is told to be still before Him.
- Zechariah 3: Joshua the High Priest Cleansed
Zechariah sees the high priest Joshua in filthy clothes, accused by Satan, whom the LORD rebukes. Joshua's guilt is taken away and he is dressed in clean garments, then charged to serve faithfully. The LORD promises to bring His servant the Branch and to take away the guilt of the land in one day.
- Zechariah 4: The Golden Lampstand and Two Olive Trees
Zechariah sees a gold lampstand fed by two olive trees. The LORD tells Zerubbabel that the temple will be finished through His Spirit rather than human strength, that obstacles will be leveled, and that small beginnings are not to be despised. The olive trees are explained as two anointed figures.
- Zechariah 5: The Flying Scroll and the Basket
Zechariah sees a huge flying scroll, God's curse sent out against thieves and those who lie under oath in His name. In a further vision a woman named Wickedness is sealed inside a measuring basket and carried away to Shinar.
- Zechariah 6: Four Chariots and the Crowned Priest
In the last night vision four chariots, the spirits of heaven, go out across the world at the LORD's command. Zechariah is told to crown Joshua the high priest as a sign of the Branch, a builder of the temple who rules as king and priest, and builders from far away are promised.
- Zechariah 7: A Question About Fasting
Men from Bethel ask whether they should keep mourning with a yearly fast. The LORD asks whether their fasts were truly for Him, repeats the earlier prophets' call to justice and mercy, and recalls how their ancestors' hard hearts led to exile.
- Zechariah 8: The LORD Promises to Restore Zion
The LORD promises to return to Jerusalem, fill its streets with old and young, gather His scattered people, and turn their curse into blessing. He calls them to honesty and justice, says their fasts will become joyful feasts, and foretells many nations seeking Him.
- Zechariah 9: The Humble King Comes to Zion
God announces judgment on Damascus, Tyre and the Philistine cities, yet promises that some Philistines will join His people. Zion is told to rejoice at her righteous King arriving lowly on a donkey to bring peace to every nation, and God vows to free His captives and save His flock.
- Zechariah 10: The LORD Gathers His Scattered Flock
The people are urged to seek rain from the LORD instead of lying idols and diviners. God turns His anger on Judah's faithless leaders, promises strength for Judah and Joseph out of His compassion, and pledges to call His scattered people home from Egypt and Assyria.
- Zechariah 11: The Shepherd Valued at Thirty Silver Pieces
A lament over fallen forests opens a picture of a doomed flock that the prophet shepherds with two staffs, Favor and Union. The flock rejects him and he breaks Favor; paid thirty silver pieces, he casts the money to the potter and breaks Union, and a worthless shepherd is foretold.
- Zechariah 12: The Pierced One and Jerusalem's Mourning
The LORD promises to make Jerusalem a source of ruin for the nations that attack it and to defend Judah and David's house. He then pours out grace on His people, and they look to the One they pierced and grieve bitterly, every family in the land mourning on its own.
- Zechariah 13: A Fountain for Cleansing and the Struck Shepherd
God opens a fountain to wash His people from sin, removes idols, and shames false prophets until they deny their calling. The LORD then calls for His Shepherd to be struck so the flock scatters, and a refined remnant comes through the fire as His people.
- Zechariah 14: The LORD Reigns Over the Whole Earth
On the day of the LORD, nations attack Jerusalem, but the LORD fights them, splitting the Mount of Olives in two where He stands. Living water flows from the city, the LORD reigns as the one King, survivors of the nations come yearly for the Feast of Tabernacles, and even common things become holy.
