Chapters in Ruth

1. Ruth 1: Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem

Famine drives Naomi’s family to Moab in the era of the judges, and there her husband and both sons die. Hearing the LORD has provided food, she heads home; Orpah turns back, but Ruth vows to take Naomi’s people and God as her own, and Naomi reaches Bethlehem lamenting that the LORD has made her life bitter.

2. Ruth 2: Ruth Gleans in the Field of Boaz

Ruth goes out to gather leftover grain and, seemingly by chance, works in the field of Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s late husband. Boaz protects her, praises her loyalty and trust in the LORD, and provides generously. Naomi rejoices to learn he is a family redeemer, and Ruth gleans in his fields until the harvest ends.

3. Ruth 3: Ruth at the Threshing Floor

Naomi sends Ruth by night to the threshing floor, where Ruth asks Boaz to take her under his protection as her kinsman-redeemer. Boaz praises her loyalty, promises to act if a nearer relative declines, and sends her home before dawn with barley for Naomi, who tells her to wait.

4. Ruth 4: Boaz Redeems and Marries Ruth

At the town gate before ten elders, a closer relative gives up his right of redemption, and Boaz buys Elimelech’s land and marries Ruth. The LORD gives them a son, Obed, the women praise God for restoring Naomi, and a closing genealogy traces the family from Perez to King David.
