Romans 2 Devotional

The Kindness That Calls Us Back

“Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance?”Romans 2:4 (BSB)

Paul has just described a world that has turned from God, and now he turns to the reader who has been nodding along. Whoever condemns others while doing the same things has no excuse (2:1-3). God judges by the truth and plays no favorites (2:11). Knowing his law, teaching it, and carrying the outward mark of belonging to his people will not shelter anyone who breaks it (2:17-25).

Tucked into this warning is one of the gentlest lines in the chapter. God's long patience is not indifference. It is kindness, and it is meant to lead us to repentance, a real turning from sin back to him (2:4). The delay in judgment is mercy, not permission. The chapter closes by pointing to what only God can do: true belonging to him is a matter of the heart, changed by the Spirit rather than by a written code (2:29). So the fitting response to his patience is not to keep measuring others, but to come to him honestly today, while his kindness is still calling.

To think about: Whose faults are you quick to notice, and what might God's patience with you be inviting you to turn from instead?

About Romans 2: God's Righteous Judgment

Paul warns that those who judge others while doing the same things will not escape God's impartial judgment according to truth. Having the Law or circumcision is no protection, since what matters is a heart made new by the Spirit, not outward identity.
