Romans 15 Devotional

Welcomed by Christ First

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”Romans 15:13 (BSB)

Paul continues his word to the strong. They should bear with the weak and seek their neighbor's good, because Christ himself did not live to please himself but took on the insults aimed at God (15:1-3). Then comes the heart of it: accept one another the way Christ has accepted you, so that God is glorified (15:7). Christ became a servant to Israel to confirm God's promises to the patriarchs, and so that the nations would praise God for his mercy (15:8-12).

The rest of the chapter shows Paul living inside that promise. He serves as a minister of Christ to the Gentiles, about to carry a gift from Gentile churches to poor believers in Jerusalem, and asking the Romans to pray for him (15:16-31). His prayer for them is that the God of hope would fill them with joy and peace as they trust him, until they overflow by the Spirit's power (15:13). Hope is not something to manufacture. It is given by God, who keeps his promises to every nation.

To think about: Who is hard for you to welcome, and how does Christ's welcome of you make room for them?
