Romans 10 Devotional

Near Enough to Call On

“that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”Romans 10:9 (BSB)

Paul's longing and prayer for Israel is that they be saved (10:1). He grants their zeal for God, but they tried to set up a righteousness of their own instead of submitting to the righteousness God gives (10:2-3). Christ brings the law's road to righteousness to its end, giving righteousness to everyone who believes (10:4).

Paul then shows how near this righteousness is. The message is already close at hand: anyone who openly owns Jesus as Lord and trusts that God raised him will be saved (10:9-10). The same Lord gives generously to all who call on him, Jew and Greek alike (10:12-13). That is why messengers are sent, for people cannot call on someone they have never heard of (10:14-15). And God's last word over Israel in this chapter is not a closed door but hands held out all day long (10:21). Salvation is not a ladder to scale. It is a Lord to call on, and someone near you may need to hear his name from you.

To think about: Who in your life has not yet clearly heard the good news, and how might God use you to bring it to them?

About Romans 10: Righteousness by Faith for All

Paul longs for Israel's salvation, since they sought their own righteousness rather than God's. Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness, and everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord and believes God raised him will be saved, so messengers must be sent to preach.
