Psalm 81 Devotional

Open Wide and Be Filled

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.”Psalm 81:10 (BSB)

Psalm 81 starts as a festival, with shouts, tambourines, harps, and the ram's horn at the appointed feast (81:1-3). Then the music stops and God speaks. He reminds his people that he lifted the burden off their shoulders in Egypt, rescued them when they called in distress, and answered them out of the thundercloud (81:6-7). He is the LORD who brought them out, and he makes a generous offer: open your mouth wide, and he will fill it (81:10).

But they would not listen, so he let them follow their own stubborn hearts (81:11-12). What follows is less anger than longing. If only his people would listen and walk in his ways, he would quickly subdue their enemies and feed them the finest wheat and honey from the rock (81:13-16). Here is a God who wants to give far more than his people will receive. The obstacle is never his supply. It is a closed mouth and a stubborn heart. You can come to him today with your need wide open.

To think about: In what area have you stopped expecting God to provide, and what would it mean to open your need wide before him?

About Psalm 81: A Festival Call and God's Plea to Listen

Asaph summons Israel to joyful festival worship commanded by God. God then speaks, recalling how He freed them from slavery in Egypt, forbidding foreign gods, and lamenting that Israel refused to heed Him, though He longed to defeat their enemies and feed them richly.
