Psalm 8 Devotional

Small Under a Vast Sky

“what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?”Psalm 8:4 (BSB)

Praise for the majesty of the LORD's name across the earth opens and closes this psalm (8:1, 8:9). In between, David looks up at the moon and stars that God set in place like a craftsman working with his fingers (8:3). Against that backdrop he asks what human beings are, that God should keep them in mind and care for them (8:4).

The surprise is God's answer. He has made humanity only slightly below the angels, given it a crown of honor, and set it over the flocks, the birds, and the fish (8:5-8). Human dignity is not something we seize. It is a crown God places on us. Hebrews takes up this psalm and admits that we do not yet see everything under humanity's feet. What we do see is Jesus, crowned with honor because he suffered death for everyone (Hebrews 2:8-9). He is the true man this psalm describes. You can feel small under a vast sky and still know you are deeply cared for, and both lead back to praise.

To think about: When you feel small or overlooked, how does it change things to know that the Maker of the stars is mindful of you?

About Psalm 8: God's Majesty and Human Dignity

David praises the LORD whose name is majestic across the earth and marvels that the Maker of the moon and stars cares for mere humans. God has honored mankind and given it rule over the animals, a picture the New Testament sees fulfilled in Jesus.
