Psalm 54 Devotional

A Helper Who Holds You Up

“Surely God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul.”Psalm 54:4 (BSB)

The heading of Psalm 54 names a bitter moment: the people of Ziph told Saul that David was hiding among them (54:1). Those who might have sheltered him gave him away. David's prayer is short and direct. He asks God to save him by his name and defend him by his might (54:1), and he calls his enemies what they are, ruthless men who care nothing for God (54:3).

At the center is a simple confession. God is his helper, and the Lord sustains his life (54:4). David does not pretend to be strong; he is being kept. Even his request about his enemies rests on God's faithfulness, not on his own schemes (54:5). He leaves the outcome with God and looks ahead to a freewill offering, a sacrifice given gladly rather than demanded (54:6). He even speaks of the rescue as already done (54:7). When people you counted on fail you, this psalm points to a helper who will not give you away but holds you up.

To think about: Who or what have you been counting on to hold you up, and how might you turn to God as your helper today?
