Psalm 52 Devotional
Rooted in Steadfast Love
“But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in the loving devotion of God forever and ever.”Psalm 52:8 (BSB)
The heading ties Psalm 52 to the day Doeg the Edomite reported to Saul where David had gone (52:1). David speaks straight to a powerful man who boasts of evil. His tongue cuts like a razor, he prefers lies to truth, and he loves words that devour (52:2-4). But first David sets down the fact the boaster has ignored: God's loving devotion lasts all day long (52:1).
Then the psalm shows two ways to stand. The mighty man never took refuge in God. He trusted his wealth and grew strong by ruining others, and God will pull him up by the roots (52:5-7). David pictures himself instead as an olive tree thriving in God's house, trusting God's loving devotion forever (52:8). One life rests on what it can grab; the other is planted in what God gives. Wealth and cruel words can look powerful, but they have no roots. A life fixed on God's steadfast love can wait on his name (52:9), even while the loud seem to be winning.
To think about: What are you most tempted to lean on for security, and what would it look like to be rooted in God's love instead?
