Psalm 48 Devotional
A City Worth Telling About
“For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even till death.”Psalm 48:14 (BSB)
This psalm is a tour of a city, and the point is the God who lives in it. Mount Zion is beautiful and lofty, the joy of the whole earth, because God dwells in her strongholds and has shown himself to be her fortress (48:1-3). Kings gathered against her, took one look, and fled in terror (48:4-6). What the people had heard about God, they have now seen for themselves (48:8).
Inside the temple, the worshipers ponder God's loving devotion (48:9). Then the psalm sends them outside to walk around Zion, count the towers, and study the ramparts, so they can tell the next generation (48:12-13). The walls are not the real story. The real story is the last verse: this God belongs to his people forever, and he will guide them to the very end (48:14). Every believer has something to pass on, not the strength of a place but the faithfulness of a Person. Take time to notice what God has done, so that you have something true to tell.
To think about: What has God done in your life that you could tell someone in the next generation this week?
