Psalm 41 Devotional

A Friend Who Turned Away

“Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”Psalm 41:9 (BSB)

The psalm's first word is a blessing on the one who looks after the poor. The LORD will rescue him in trouble, protect him, and sustain him on his sickbed (41:1-3). Then the psalm becomes personal. David is the one lying ill, and he asks God to be gracious and heal him, because he has sinned against him (41:4). Enemies wonder aloud when he will die (41:5).

The deepest wound comes last. Even a close friend he trusted, someone who ate his bread, has turned against him (41:9). Jesus applied this verse at the Last Supper to the one who shared his bread and then betrayed him (John 13:18). The Son of David knew this kind of betrayal from the inside, so the betrayed have a Savior who understands. David's confidence rests on God's grace, not on people's loyalty. God upholds him and sets him in his presence forever (41:12). The psalm closes with praise to Israel's God, blessed from eternity to eternity (41:13). His faithfulness outlasts every friendship that fails.

To think about: Has someone close to you let you down, and how does it help to know that Jesus has walked through betrayal too?

About Psalm 41: Care for the Weak and a Friend's Betrayal

David describes God's care for those who look after the poor, then confesses his sin and asks for healing while enemies wish him dead. Even a trusted companion turns on him, a betrayal Jesus applies to Judas, and the psalm ends with praise closing the first book of Psalms.
