Psalm 4 Devotional

Joy Better Than Harvest

“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8 (BSB)

An evening prayer, this psalm moves toward sleep. David asks God to answer him, remembering that God has relieved his distress before (4:1). Then he turns to the people around him, who love what is empty and chase after lies (4:2), and reminds them that the LORD has claimed the faithful as his own (4:3). His counsel is surprisingly quiet: be angry without sinning, search your heart on your bed, be still, and trust the LORD (4:4-5).

Many are asking who will show them anything good (4:6). David's answer is not a better harvest but the light of God's face. God has given him a deeper joy than overflowing grain and wine could bring (4:7). That joy does not depend on the crop coming in. So the psalm ends with him lying down in peace, because the LORD alone keeps him safe (4:8). The good that people keep searching for is found in God himself, turned toward his people in favor, and no failed harvest can take that away.

To think about: Where have you been searching for something good this week, and what would it mean to ask instead for the light of God's face?
