Psalm 38 Devotional

When Guilt Weighs Heavy

“O Lord, my every desire is before You; my groaning is not hidden from You.”Psalm 38:9 (BSB)

Few prayers in the book are as painful as this one. David asks the LORD not to discipline him in anger, then describes what he is suffering: no health in his body, no rest in his bones, wounds that fester, a frame bent low (38:3-7). He traces it plainly to his own sin, which has become a burden too heavy to carry (38:4).

There is no turn to celebration, only a final plea for God to hurry to help (38:22). Yet faith runs all through it. David tells the Lord that all his longing lies open before him and his groaning is not hidden (38:9). He waits for God, sure that God will answer (38:15). He confesses his guilt without excuse (38:18). This is what repentance can look like on a hard day: not a tidy resolution, but bringing the whole weight of guilt and pain to the only one who can save. David's last word for God is Savior. Even trouble you brought on yourself can be brought to him.

To think about: What burden of guilt or pain have you been hiding, and could you lay it open before God today as David did?

About Psalm 38: A Plea for Mercy Under Discipline

Sick and in pain, David pleads that the LORD not discipline him in anger and traces his suffering to his own sin. Shunned by friends and hunted by enemies, he stays silent and waits for God, confesses his guilt, and closes with an urgent cry for help from his Savior.
