Psalm 33 Devotional
A Word That Made the Stars
“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the stars by the breath of His mouth.”Psalm 33:6 (BSB)
Psalm 33 calls the righteous to sing a new song and play with skill (33:1-3). The LORD's word is upright and his work is faithful (33:4). His word made the heavens and his breath made the stars. He gave the command, and it stood firm (33:6-9). The same God brings the plans of nations to nothing, while his own purposes stand through every generation (33:10-11).
No army is large enough to save a king, and a war horse is a false hope for rescue (33:16-17). Human strength is real, but it cannot save. Instead, the LORD keeps watch over those who revere him and hope in his loving devotion (33:18). The psalm ends with God's people waiting for him as their help and shield, asking that his love rest on them as they hope in him (33:20-22). The God who spoke the stars into being is not too busy to watch over those who trust him. Whatever plans are pressing on you, his counsel will still be standing.
To think about: Which of your own plans have you been trusting to save you, and how might you place your hope in God's loving devotion instead?
