Psalm 24 Devotional

Make Way for the King

“Who is He, this King of Glory? The LORD of Hosts—He is the King of Glory. Selah”Psalm 24:10 (BSB)

Psalm 24 starts with ownership. The earth and everything in it belong to the LORD, because he founded it (24:1-2). Then comes a pointed question: if the whole world is his, who may climb his hill and stand in his holy place (24:3)? The answer is the one whose hands are clean and whose heart is pure, who does not give himself to idols or make deceitful oaths (24:4).

The final verses turn the question around. Now it is not a worshiper approaching God, but God approaching. The ancient gates are called to lift their heads so the King of glory can come in (24:7). Who is he? The LORD, mighty in strength and in battle, the LORD of armies (24:8-10). Both are true: God is holy, and he is the King who comes to his people. In Jesus the King of glory came near, to make clean those who could never cleanse themselves. The question is no longer only who may go up to God, but whether we will welcome the God who comes down.

To think about: What would it look like to welcome the King of glory into an area of your life you have kept closed?

About Psalm 24: The Glorious King Enters

David declares that the whole earth belongs to the LORD because He created it. He asks who may approach God's holy hill and answers that it is the person of pure life and heart, then calls the gates and ancient doors to open for the glorious King, the mighty LORD of armies.
