Psalm 148 Devotional

A Choir of Everything

“Let them praise the name of the LORD, for He gave the command and they were created.”Psalm 148:5 (BSB)

Psalm 148 gathers a choir larger than any building could hold. It begins in the heavens with angels, heavenly hosts, sun and moon, shining stars, and the highest heavens (148:1-4). They are to praise him because he gave the command and they were created, and he set them in place by a decree that stands (148:5-6). Then the call moves down to earth: sea creatures, lightning, hail, snow, stormy wind, mountains, fruit trees, cattle, birds, and crawling creatures (148:7-10).

Only after all that come people: kings and nations, young men and maidens, old and young together (148:11-12). Yet the psalm ends with something the stars cannot claim. God has raised up strength for his people, a people he has drawn close to himself (148:14). Revelation pictures every creature in heaven and on earth praising God and the Lamb (Revelation 5:13). Wherever you look today, at the sky, a tree, or a face, you see members of the choir, and you are invited to join them as one brought near.

To think about: What part of creation could you notice today as a reminder to join its praise of God?

About Psalm 148: All Creation Called to Praise

The psalm summons everything in the heavens to worship the LORD, from angels to sun, moon, and stars, because He created them by His command. It then calls the sea, weather, land, animals, and every rank and age of people to join in, since His name stands above every other and He has strengthened Israel.
