Psalm 138 Devotional

A Purpose He Will Finish

“The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me. O LORD, Your loving devotion endures forever—do not abandon the works of Your hands.”Psalm 138:8 (BSB)

David gives thanks with his whole heart, bowing toward God's holy temple and praising his name for his loving devotion and faithfulness (138:1-2). On the day he called, God answered him and strengthened his soul (138:3). From that one answer, David looks ahead to a day when all the kings of the earth will thank the LORD (138:4-5).

Verse 6 holds a striking contrast. The LORD is on high, yet he attends to the lowly, while the proud he knows only from a distance. Then David speaks with quiet confidence about his future. Even in the middle of trouble, God preserves him and saves him with his right hand (138:7). The LORD will fulfill his purpose for him, and David asks God not to abandon the works of his hands (138:8). Paul shares that confidence, that God will finish the good work he has begun in believers (Philippians 1:6). What God has started in you, he does not intend to leave unfinished.

To think about: Where do you feel unfinished right now, and how does God's commitment to complete his work give you hope?
