Psalm 127 Devotional

Rest for the Beloved

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat—for He gives sleep to His beloved.”Psalm 127:2 (BSB)

Psalm 127, headed as Solomon's, is about work and rest. Builders can labor and watchmen can stand guard, but unless the LORD builds the house and protects the city, their efforts are in vain (127:1). The psalm is not against work. It is against work that tries to do God's part. Rising early, staying up late, and toiling anxiously for bread add nothing, because God gives sleep to those he loves (127:2).

The second half turns to children, and the same idea continues. Children are not a human achievement but a heritage and reward from the LORD (127:3), like arrows in a warrior's hand (127:4-5). Both halves say that home, safety, provision, and family come from God's hand before ours. Jesus told his followers not to worry about what they would eat or drink, because their heavenly Father knows what they need (Matthew 6:31-32). Sleep itself can be an act of trust. You can work hard today and then rest, because the outcome was never yours to secure.

To think about: Where are you working as though everything depends on you, and what would it look like to rest in God's care tonight?

About Psalm 127: The LORD as Builder and Giver

A song attributed to Solomon teaches that building, guarding, and endless toil all fail without the LORD, who gives rest to those He loves. Children are then described as His gift and reward, like arrows in a warrior's hand, so that a father is not disgraced before opponents at the gate.
