Psalm 121 Devotional

A Keeper Who Never Sleeps

“The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.”Psalm 121:8 (BSB)

A traveler lifts his eyes to the hills and asks where his help will come from (121:1). He answers at once: from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth (121:2). The help he needs is not in the landscape but in the one who made it.

The rest of the psalm says the same thing again and again: the LORD keeps his people. He keeps your feet from slipping (121:3). He never dozes or sleeps (121:4), so there is no hour when his people go unwatched. He is shade at your right hand, so that neither sun by day nor moon by night will strike you (121:5-6). He guards you from all evil and watches over your going and coming, now and forever (121:7-8). The psalm does not promise a road without hardship. It promises a Keeper who stays awake on it. Jesus promised that his sheep are held securely in his hand (John 10:28). Whatever road you take today, you will not travel it unwatched.

To think about: Which going out or coming in in your day could you consciously place under the LORD's watch?
