Psalm 113 Devotional

High Enough to Stoop Low

“Who is like the LORD our God, the One enthroned on high?”Psalm 113:5 (BSB)

Psalm 113 calls the LORD's servants to praise his name now and forever, from sunrise to sunset (113:1-3). He is exalted over the nations, his glory above the heavens (113:4). Then the psalm asks who could compare with him (113:5). The answer is surprising. This God is so high that he must humble himself even to look at the heavens and the earth (113:6), and yet he does look, and he stoops all the way down.

He raises the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage heap, and seats them among princes (113:7-8). He gives the childless woman a home and makes her a joyful mother (113:9). His greatness shows itself not by keeping its distance but by bending low to lift those no one else notices. Paul describes Christ humbling himself all the way to a cross (Philippians 2:8). That is how far this God was willing to stoop. No one sits too low for him to reach.

To think about: Where do you feel low or overlooked today, and how does the God who stoops change the way you see that place?
