Psalm 110 Devotional

Priest and King Forever

“The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.””Psalm 110:4 (BSB)

In Psalm 110 David records the LORD speaking to someone David calls his Lord, inviting him to sit at God's right hand until every enemy is placed under his feet (110:1). Jesus once asked how the Messiah could be David's son if David himself called him Lord (Mark 12:35-37). The answer is that David's descendant would be far greater than David.

Then comes an oath God will never take back: this king is also a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek (110:4). One person holds both offices, ruling for God and standing before God for his people. Hebrews builds a long argument on this verse. Jesus became a priest by God's oath, and because he lives forever, he never stops interceding for his people (Hebrews 7:20-25). The king rules from Zion with a willing people (110:2-3) and will judge the nations (110:6). The one seated at God's right hand is mighty enough to defeat every enemy and near enough to bring you to God.

To think about: How does it change your prayers today to know that the King at God's right hand is also a priest who intercedes for you?

About Psalm 110: David's Lord the Priest King

David records God's promise to enthrone his Lord at God's right hand until every enemy is subdued. The King rules from Zion with a willing people, is sworn in as an eternal priest like Melchizedek, and judges the nations; the New Testament applies the psalm to Jesus.
