Psalm 108 Devotional

A Steady Heart Before the Battle

“For Your loving devotion extends beyond the heavens, and Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.”Psalm 108:4 (BSB)

David begins this psalm with a settled heart. Before any battle is won, he resolves to sing, to wake the dawn with music, and to praise the LORD among the nations (108:1-3). His confidence rests on a love that reaches beyond the heavens and a faithfulness that touches the clouds (108:4). Much of this wording also appears in Psalms 57 and 60.

The second half is more strained. God has spoken from his sanctuary, claiming Israel's land and the surrounding nations as his own (108:7-9). Yet David still asks who will lead him to the fortified city, and wonders whether God has rejected his people (108:10-11). Promise and present struggle sit side by side. David's answer is not to trust himself more. Human help is worthless, he says, but with God his people will act with valor (108:12-13). Praise does not have to wait until the outcome is clear. A heart can be steady in the morning because it rests on God's love rather than its own strength.

To think about: What struggle in front of you could you begin with praise today, before you know how it will turn out?

About Psalm 108: Confident Praise and a Plea for Victory

David resolves to praise God among the nations for a love and faithfulness higher than the sky, then asks Him to save His people. God announces His claim over Israel's lands and the nations around it, and David ends trusting God rather than human help for victory. Its wording closely matches parts of Psalms 57 and 60.
