Proverbs 5 Devotional

Delight Kept Close to Home

“For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD examines all his paths.”Proverbs 5:21 (BSB)

This chapter is frank about a temptation that can ruin a life. The forbidden woman's words are sweet and smooth, but in the end they turn bitter and sharp, and her path leads down to death (5:3-5). The father pictures his son at the end of a wasted life, worn out and groaning, wishing he had listened (5:11-14).

Yet the chapter is not only a warning. It holds out something better: delight in the wife of one's youth, a love meant to be enjoyed and celebrated (5:15-19). God's boundaries around sex and marriage are not a fence around joy but the shape joy takes. Every path a person takes lies open before the LORD, who examines them all (5:21). For those who have already wandered, that same God offers more than exposure. Paul wrote to believers who had once lived in sexual sin that they had been washed and made right with God in the name of the Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). Faithfulness grows best out of that cleansing.

To think about: What sweet-sounding temptation do you need to see in light of where it leads, and in light of God's mercy?

About Proverbs 5: Warning Against the Adulteress

A father warns his son that the forbidden woman's appealing words lead to bitterness, ruin, and death, and that going to her would waste his strength and wealth and end in regret. He urges faithful delight in his own wife instead, reminding him that the LORD sees every path and that sin traps the one who commits it.
