Proverbs 24 Devotional

Rising After the Fall

“For though a righteous man may fall seven times, he still gets up; but the wicked stumble in bad times.”Proverbs 24:16 (BSB)

The righteous fall too, and Proverbs 24 is honest about it. A righteous person may go down again and again and still get back up, while the wicked stumble when hard times come and do not recover (24:16). The saying pictures the righteous not as people who never fall but as people who rise. Their resilience comes not from never stumbling but from being held.

The chapter hints at who holds them. The LORD weighs hearts, guards lives, and knows what people pretend not to know (24:12). He calls his people to rescue those being led away to death (24:11) and forbids them to gloat when an enemy falls (24:17-18). The righteous rise because God keeps hold of those who are his, and the same mercy that lifts them makes them unwilling to cheer at an enemy's ruin. A fall, even a repeated one, is not the end of the story. By God's grace, the righteous are the ones who keep getting up.

To think about: Where have you fallen again recently, and what would it look like to get up today trusting the God who keeps hold of you?

About Proverbs 24: Rescue the Doomed and the Lazy Man's Field

The words of the wise continue with warnings against envying evildoers and praise for wisdom that builds a household and wins battles. They call for rescuing those headed for death, forbid gloating and revenge, demand fair judgment, and end with lessons drawn from a lazy man's overgrown field.
